Dog Search and Rescue

Sensofly received a call on January 28th to help locate a missing greyhound dog in Yorba Linda. The timing could not have been more perfect. At the meetup the day before, two pilots expressed interest in doing search and rescue and were looking for jobs. Michael, David, and Han responded to the mission and used the DJI Mavic 2 Thermal, Mavic 3 Thermal, and Matrice 350 to cover several areas of foothills looking for the dog thermal signature. It was a learning experience for us all. We found out how difficult it was to look for heat signatures during the day when there was alot of distractions with the general environment was heated us as well. Flying again at night helped remove some thermal noise, but then it was difficult to see how close the drone was to obstacles in the dark. The hills presented a challenge because of reduced line of sight and the need to keep changing attitude. Although we were unable to find the dog that night after 8 hours of searching, we were relieved to hear that the owner was reunited with the dog the next day.
